INVERURIE Locos Chairman Mike Macaulay has even more reason to hope his side go all the way in the GPH Builders Merchants Highland League Cup after the Garioch side were drawn at home against Huntly in the first round of this season’s competition.

Macaulay was speaking following the first round draw – which featured youngsters from Colony Park and Formartine United drawing teams from a cement mixer at new cup sponsors GPH Builders Merchants’ Inverurie HQ – pitched holders Rothes against Deveronvale or Lossiemouth.

Macaulay, who is also Chairman of GPH Builders Merchants, said: “Without putting the Locos lads under pressure, on a personal level as Chairman of Inverurie Loco Works, I would love nothing more than to see Neil McLean lift the League Cup adorned with GPH ribbons!

“It’s great to put something back into the League, which plays an important role in towns across the north of Scotland. Having seen first hand the impact clubs have in their communities from youth football through to first team level, we are delighted to help support all 18 clubs in what has been a tough time for them all.”

The company, which already sponsors the Aberdeenshire and District Football Association’s Under 21 League has signed a two-year deal with the Highland League.

Former Elgin City full-back Grant Shewan, GPH Builders Merchants’ Managing Director, added: “We enter our 40th year of trading next year, and we wanted to do something in the communities we operate in to celebrate that.

“Football, particularly at Highland League level, is an important part of those communities, with clubs playing a huge role in many aspects of life, including being the highlight of the week for some.

“There are countless volunteers who give up their time to help clubs, and in turn the community, and we can’t wait for the competition to start in a few weeks’ time.”
