Seamus Logan MP has visited National Gas at St Fergus Gas Terminal to learn more on its central importance to national energy security, as home to the landmark Acorn Carbon Capture and Storage Project, and its recent infrastructure upgrades on site.

St Fergus is responsible for handling around 25% of the UK’s gas supply on any given day and is key to a number of projects that aim to help support the transition to clean energy. These include a core hydrogen network using repurposed pipelines to move hydrogen for use in power stations and industry, and, as a vital catalyst for industrial decarbonisation in Scotland, the Acorn Carbon Capture and Storage Project, with National Gas Transmission SCO2T Connect Project transporting captured emissions offshore from St Fergus.

Commenting, Seamus Logan MP said:

“My thanks go to National Gas Terminal Manager, Malcolm Smith, and his team for the extensive and fascinating tour of the facilities at St Fergus. I gained huge insight into the importance of this terminal both locally and nationally in terms of our energy security and the transition to clean energy on our journey to net zero.

“Since becoming the MP for Aberdeenshire North and Moray East I have been continually pressing the UK Government to give the green light to the Acorn project at St Fergus. Carbon capture and storage is an essential part of our green industrial transformation and will provide a huge boost both to the constituency in terms of green jobs, the Just Transition for oil and gas workers, economic growth, and supply chain opportunities as well as nationally as part of our climate change ambitions and decarbonisation goals.

“It is vital that the Labour Government commit to funding this project as soon as possible, as has been advised by industry experts and business leaders here in Scotland. Although they have committed £22 billion to similar projects in England, at present there is no cast iron pledge for Acorn, with information promised instead in their June Spending Review.

“It is worrying that Labour at Westminster is taking so long to outline this investment in no uncertain terms. Our First Minister in Scotland has pledged to increase the amount of funding for the project from the Scottish Government if the UK Government backs it. Labour needs to rise to this challenge and write the cheque – if they can commit to the North of England projects, they must also commit to St Fergus without delay.”
