MAGGIE’S Aberdeen is anticipating an increase in demand for its support groups and courses in response to prolonged pandemic isolation and the approach of winter.

Support for those in the North-east includes cancer-specific networking groups, stress management courses, bereavement support, mindfulness courses and rehabilitation support.

Throughout the Coronavirus pandemic, Maggie’s Aberdeen has continued to support people with cancer and their families and friends via phone and video calls. Since June, the charity has offered individual face-to-face appointments in the centre.

This month, Maggie’s Aberdeen is working together with Look Good Feel Better to offer a virtual workshop to women who are about to start, already on or just finished cancer treatment.

The workshop provides the opportunity for women to meet and chat with others sharing a similar experience and covers gentle skin care and make-up application, to help combat any changes experienced due to treatment, and to boost confidence.

The groups are relaxed and safe spaces to meet other people who are sharing a similar experience and provide an opportunity to talk about common challenges and effective ways to work through them.

Megan Graham, Maggie’s Aberdeen cancer support specialist, said: “People have been through so much already this year. Social restrictions can add to apprehensions about meeting others to talk about their cancer diagnosis, treatment, recovery or grief.

“The onset of winter can add to those feelings of isolation. However, engaging with others can be a very positive experience.

“Knowing that there are others thinking, feeling and going through the same challenges helps people feel less alone and the sharing of hints and tips of how to cope with the different aspects of a cancer experience amongst the groups is extremely beneficial to the physical and emotional well-being of those who attend.”

The workshop is taking place on November 25 at 10.30am.
