A Scottish makeup college is set to expand to Aberdeen – creating 12 new jobs as part of a £350,000 investment in the city.

GlamCandy is investing the sum in the Holburn Street premises, which is set to open its doors in February 2019.

The award-winning firm is currently recruiting for 12 makeup artists and tutors to work at the new college where they expect to train up to 200 students a year.

GlamCandy offers recognised qualifications accredited by the SQA and City and Guilds – offering their students a pathway to a new career in the industry.

Last year they boasted a 100% employment rate for students graduating from their Dunfermline college.

As well as the college GlamCandy will be opening a cosmetics shop at the premises – offering top brands such as Illamasqua, Kryolan and Karla Powell.

The move comes as they embark on an ambitious UK wide investment programme after partnering with Julian Kynaston – the man behind cult makeup brand Illamasqua.

They are aiming to take on up to 50 new staff across Scotland as they open new colleges around the country.

Julian said that the expansion would allow their students to start careers that could take them to the very top of the industry.

He said: “There’s a misperception that makeup is easy and that everyone can do it.

“The internet – online tutorials and the like – is possibly responsible for that.

“The truth is it is an incredible skill and once practised professionally and correctly it is a very, very powerful tool and can be an amazing career that can take you as far as you want to go.”

Managing director Hayley Harvey-Smith said her team were excited to expand their presence into Aberdeen – and to offer their students a first-rate learning experience.

She said: “Our new college will allow us to offer a wide range of courses to our students as well as state-of-the-art facilities,

“Everyone who completes our professional level courses receives superb tuition from our extremely talented tutors and a portfolio of work that makes them immediately employable.

“We are building our own photography studio within the Aberdeen college and all our students will have the chance to have their work featured in our nationally available magazine which launches next year.

“Giving them the chance to build that portfolio is massive in terms of employability and that is always our focus.

“We also offer makeup appointments for women who want a one-off makeover or who are preparing for a big night out – as well as bridal makeup and personal lessons, something that we offer uniquely in the north-east.

“It is a really exciting time for GlamCandy and we’re proud to be expanding our presence in Aberdeen and look forward to training the next generation of makeup artists in the area.”

Julian Kynaston, the serial entrepreneur who sold his Illamasqua beauty brand for £23 million last year, has been the driving force behind a major investment in GlamCandy.

Julian added: “GlamCandy is already the top makeup college brand in Scotland – and investing in our presence in Aberdeen simply reaffirms that.

“Our programme of investment aims to improve the student experience, allow the team to train more students and give them the skills to start a career in the beauty industry.”
