CITY centre venue Resident X has closed with immediate effect, with operators admitting it “doesn’t make financial sense to continue”.

The council-owned bar and food hall was first opened in 2023, but then-operators David Griffiths and Michael Robertson handed the keys back by the end of the year.

Ryan Clark and Andy Eager, who have ran a number of Aberdeen venues, took control, before calling it a day yesterday.

The duo were given 12 months of business rates relief, but with that now up, the pair would need to cough up “something like £70,000”.

Hundreds of football fans packed into the Marischal Square complex just a few months ago to watch Scotland in the Euro’s, while the operators have also looked to drum up footfall by hosting various DJ and live entertainment nights.

Occupying 10,000 sq ft at the foot of the modern Broad Street office block, the street food market opened in January 2023. Initially managed by the Aberdam team, David Griffiths and Michael Robertson, it operated for a year before they moved out after a whirlwind of controversy and unresolved issues regarding a £1 million loan from the city council.

A joint statement on behalf of Aberdeen City Council and Resident X stated: “The lease is to end this month, and operations will cease then.

“Aberdeen City Council will look for a new leaseholder for the Resident X site in Marischal Square.”
