More than 15 schools across Aberdeenshire have not been inspected by the Scottish Government for 15 years – the second highest number in Scotland.

The shocking statistics, released by the Scottish Government, show 17 (10%) of the region’s primary schools haven’t been inspected for almost two decades.

These include Peterhead Central School, King Edward School and Strichen School which all haven’t been checked by government officials since 2009.

Others include Ellon Primary School, Meldrum School and Strathburn School in Inverurie.

A further 48 (29%) across Aberdeenshire have not been inspected for ten years. A total of 97 have not been assessed for seven years while a massive 119 have not been checked by the Scottish Government for 5 years.

The figure is the joint second highest in Scotland alongside Glasgow, and behind the Highlands which tops the list.

Scottish Conservative North East MSP Douglas Lumsden said: “It’s completely unacceptable that so many of Aberdeenshire’s schools have gone 15 years without being inspected by the Scottish Government.

“Parents and their children deserve better than to be treated as an afterthought by the SNP.

“We need a rigorous, reliable and, above all, regular inspections system so that parents are aware of how their child’s school is performing and what improvements can be made to help enhance their education.

“In too many cases, parents are kept in the dark over the performance of our schools on the SNP’s watch.

“At a time when the attainment gap remains enormous, teachers are at breaking point and classroom violence is rising, these alarming statistics are proof that education has never been a priority for this Scottish Government.”
