Seamus Logan MP has given his backing to the Carbon Capture and Storage Association’s skills initiative launched at a parliamentary event marking the publication of a paper focused on new opportunities for careers in the Carbon Capture and Storage industry.

Launched by the Carbon Capture and Storage Association, this paper entitled ‘Delivering CCUS: Building the Workforce & Skills for the UK’s Industrial Transition’, features case studies showcasing how investment in CCUS is creating opportunities for the next generation of energy and industry professionals.

The event brought together cross-party parliamentarians with industry leaders delivering CCUS projects across the UK or keen to make the most of developing new opportunities alongside apprentices and graduates working across this sector.

The paper’s recommendations include unlocking greater policy certainty from Government to allow clear routes to market, ensuring investors, employers and training providers can be confident in backing a wider pipeline of projects and the workforce needed to deliver them. Getting this right means creating real career opportunities in industrial communities for young professionals with estimates of around 15,000 direct roles and a further 50,000 jobs if the CCUS sector is fully developed, not to mentions safeguarding existing industrial employment.

Commenting, Seamus Logan MP said:

“As MP for Aberdeenshire North and Moray East, investment in our young workforce by unlocking key opportunities in the CCUS sector is crucial to our growth. It matches the ambition and commitment I’ve encountered with local educational establishments such as the North-east Scotland College, employers like SSEN and ambitious businesses linked to this industry.

“Since becoming an MP, I’ve been pushing for the UK Government to show support for the Acorn Carbon Capture and Storage Project at St Fergus near Peterhead in the same way that has been afforded to projects in Humberside and Teeside as discussed at this launch. The recurring theme of these discussions centres on creating a much more certain policy landscape to boost investor confidence, protect jobs, and build a workforce and skills base that is fit for the future. We live in challenging and uncertain economic times, making it all the more important to build a resilient workforce and a fully supported carbon capture, utilisation and storage sector as part of our decarbonisation drive.

“It was inspirational to meet with the young apprentices, including some local to my constituency, to hear about their experiences working in this sector and their ambitions for the future. We must work together to do all we can to protect and deliver successful career pathways for these young professionals across engineering, manufacture, and construction as part of the wider Just Transition.”
