Scottish Conservative MP for Gordon and Buchan, Harriet Cross, has criticised the Labour government following the UK’s first farming strike, which has disrupted national wheat reserves and is expected to cause flour shortages ahead of Easter.
Scottish Conservative MP for Gordon and Buchan, Harriet Cross, who has campaigned against Keir Starmer’s attack on farmers, said: “This strike is a direct consequence of the Labour UK Government’s abandonment of British farming which is threatening our food security.
“Farmers have been pushed into a corner by Keir Starmer and now feel they have no choice other than to take this action, which could be replicated across the UK.
“He is crippling the industry with Labour’s family farm tax, rises to employer National Insurance contributions and a new fertiliser levy.
“This action should send a warning to Keir Starmer that our farmers are not going to accept this government’s attack on their livelihoods lying down.
“It’s imperative he reverses his reckless policies to prevent further strikes and to safeguard farming, rural communities and the nation’s food security before it’s too late.”
