Aberdeenshire North and Moray East SNP MP Seamus Logan met with NFUS members on Friday (Nov 8) at an on-farm meeting attended by other North-east politicians.

Mr Logan, who is the SNP’s Westminster spokesperson on rural affairs, had earlier in the week written to Chancellor Rachel Reeves urging a rethink on the proposals outlined in the UK Government’s Budget, backed a Motion in Parliament calling for the same, and raised the impact the plans will have on food security during DEFRA Questions in the House of Commons.

Commenting after meeting with NFUS members, Seamus Logan MP said:

“This was a very useful and constructive meeting and it was good to hear the views of NFUS members first hand on the UK Government’s proposals.

“It’s clear that there is not only a great deal of anger at the announcement, particularly after the current Secretary of State at DEFRA had previously stated that there were no such plans, but also huge concern at what the proposals mean in practice.

“We heard at the meeting from farmers who have already put on hold plans to invest in the future of their farming operations purely as a result of the Budget.

“This proposal is causing uncertainty, insecurity and is already leading to investment being paused.  I will continue in my efforts to force a rethink on the plans and urge farmers to make their voices heard on the matter.”
