Music, family, comedy, drama, dance and orchestras add a splash of colour to Union Street at the Music Hall

The Music Hall with renewed banners

ABERDEEN’S Music Hall has added a splash of colour to its historic Union Street frontage with the unveiling of bright new banners.

The much-loved city centre venue, which is run by Aberdeen Performing Arts, is known for its wide-ranging programme of events as well as being a public space for the people of Aberdeen to congregate and celebrate life events such as graduations.

The new banners, funded by Aberdeen Performing Arts, will focus on what the Music Hall brings to the city, and Union Street in particular, with the themes music, family, comedy, drama, dance and orchestras all featured.

Aberdeen Performing Arts Chief Executive, Sharon Burgess said: “The exterior banners have been absent since before the pandemic, so bringing them back represents a really positive step forwards. We want to celebrate all that the Music Hall brings to Aberdeen, and the bold, eye-catching new banners serve as a welcoming beacon for this iconic venue.
“The Music Hall is for the people – whether it’s a first experience of live music, a special moment seeing an inspirational performer, taking part in our creative engagement programme or a life event such as a graduation, these new banners are a reminder of what a special place the Music Hall is for so many reasons.”

Aberdeen City Council’s culture spokesperson Councillor Martin Greig said: “These colourful banners will help fly the flag for performing arts in Aberdeen.
“Their vibrancy will really draw attention to the Music Hall and remind residents of this fabulous venue right on our doorstep. These exciting designs will catch the attention of visitors to the city and highlight the wonderful diversity of shows and events held in the Music Hall through the year.”

Our Union Street leader Bob Kieller commented: “The Music Hall is an iconic venue that deserves to be noticed and this is a welcome and colourful addition to the streetscape.”

Adrian Watson, Chief Executive of the city centre BID Aberdeen Inspired, welcomed the new banners. He said: “It’s great to see the new banners bringing bright colours to Union Street as well as drawing people to the Music Hall, which is an iconic, landmark granite building on our main street. We hope audiences at the Music Hall will be encouraged to spend time in the city centre while they are taking in a concert or show, and make the most of Aberdeen’s restaurants, bars and shops while they are here.”

The inviting banners mark the entrance to the venue, which boasts an impressive digital artspace known as the Stepping In screen, on entry as well as an accessible sesame lift, providing street to seat access for all.

The 200 year-old venue re-opened in December 2018 following an extensive transformation project which included a new performance studio, creative engagement studio, café and revamped box office.
