Mike Wilson, Managing Director of Mearns & Gill, shared his appreciation:

“This year’s Trades Awards have been truly inspiring. The diversity and calibre of this year’s finalists and winners highlight the resilience and innovation within the North of Scotland’s construction sector. It was a privilege to celebrate the achievements of so many talented individuals and companies who continue to drive the industry forward. Congratulations to all the winners – your hard work and dedication are a testament to the strength and future of construction in Scotland.”

This year’s event was sponsored by the CHAP Group, alongside continued support from longstanding sponsor W M Donald, this year as Supporting Sponsor. Each year the Trades Awards also supports a local charity, funds were raised on the night to support the STV Appeal. Over £4,000 was raised and will go on to support children and families affected by poverty in the Northeast.

Isla Stewart, account manager at Mearns & Gill, commented:

“The Trades Awards have once again showcased excellence across the industry. It’s been inspiring to see so many businesses, including many first-time entrants, being recognised for their achievements. We’re so proud to be part of an event that highlights the remarkable talent and innovation within the North of Scotland.”

Elaine Donald, Director of W M Donald, was the recipient of the ‘Outstanding Contribution’ award, which was revealed on the evening. This award is given to individuals in the construction industry who have devoted their career to driving positive change, encouraging the next generation, and raising the profile of the industry in general.

Talking of the decision on the recipient of the ‘Outstanding Contribution’ award, head judge Kim Woolner commented:

“Recognising Elaine in this public way was an easy choice for the judging panel. When we look back at Elaine’s five decades in the industry, it is hard to think of her as anything other than a trailblazer for women in a male-dominated industry. She is also only the 2nd female to receive this award in 12 years.

Elaine was going toe-to-toe with the best in this male dominated industry long before equality was a thing.  She has been, and continues to be, a role model for all young women who want to have a successful career in construction and civil engineering. This will be a legacy that she should be extremely proud of.  She has inspired many people to be better versions of themselves and showed that if you put in the graft, you will reap the rewards. Elaine was also described by her colleagues as “the glue that holds all departments together.”

Kim concluded: “By setting, delivering and exceeding incredibly high standards for herself, her family and for WM Donald, and through shear hard graft, she has played a leading role in how this industry has been shaped over the years.  This is something that the construction industry shall be forever grateful for.”

Andy McNair, Pre-Construction Director of CHAP Group (Aberdeen), said: “We are proud to have sponsored this year’s event, which saw an unprecedented number of applications, demonstrating the talent and skill present within our region. It was in incredible night to recognise the outstanding contributions that shape our industry, inspiring future generations along the way. The importance of encouraging young people to join our industry was very clear, and the Rising Star category was outstanding.  It is the mix of their energy and passion, combined with the vast experience found here in the north east that drives the sector’s continued growth and sustainability.”
