DIVERSITY and inclusion organisation AFBE-UK Scotland is launching a new programme to help ethnic minority professionals progress into leadership roles.
Transcend is designed for individuals with over 10 years’ experience in senior and lead engineering roles in their organisation to progress to high-level management and executive positions.

The virtual programme runs from Saturday, April 30 to Saturday, July 2 (2022) and is delivered through a series of sessions that seeks to unearth the barriers to career progression and chart a path into leadership.
The sessions will cover a range of topics including leadership communication; unconscious bias; negotiation; limiting behaviours; calling out and buddying up; role models; coaching and mentoring.
The programme selected 10 professionals in March.
AFBE-UK Scotland leadership team coordinator, Dr Roy Bitrus who leads Transcend, has been working on the course for over two years. He said: “It was an honour to officially launch the Transcend programme last week at AFBELive 2022.”
“Transcend aims to inspire, engage and equip professionals of minority ethnic origin with the tools they need to progress into corporate leadership roles. We anticipate that this programme will also provide corporate organisations and institutions with resources they can use to diversify their management and leadership structures.”
Dr Ollie Folayan, chair of Aberdeen-based AFBE-UK Scotland, said: “For years we have run programmes to support early and mid-careers but the Transcend programme exists to support the latter career stages of BME engineers. It is important to train more leaders to increase the representation at board level.”
AFBE-UK Scotland’s Transcend programme was officially launched at the IET in London last week at the AFBELive 2022 conference. Over 500 people attended the all-day conference where a host of industry leaders shared insights across the engineering and STEM industries.
AFBE-UK Scotland supports all young people, particularly those from black and minority ethnic (BME) backgrounds, with career aspirations in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).
AFBE-UK Scotland has supported thousands of young people since it first launched in 2011. The organisation is part of AFBE-UK, which is based in London.
AFBE-UK Scotland provides mentoring programmes to support young people with their STEM careers. This includes its schools programme NextGen, where industry leaders and professionals give advice to pupils through practical events; Transition, where industry leaders help aspiring engineering professionals to enter the job market; and Real Projects, where industry professionals share their knowledge and expertise.
