MORE of George Street could be closed off to cars as new council masterplan is revealed.

Images show a tree-lined zig-zagging bike lane on George Street as part of plans to redefine the area as a “comfortable and distinctive destination”.

The area between Spring Garden and John Street would be narrowed, while planners think private motor traffic should be allowed to travel southbound only, with only buses permitted to drive north.

The rejig would give more space for pedestrians.

Six ‘transformational projects’

Council papers outline half-a-dozen projects with potential to transform the street:

  • Improving and modernising the street
  • Creating ‘Norco Place’, a mini-park outside the former John Lewis building
  • Reimagining the Bon Accord Centre
  • Making more of the area surrounding Nescol
  • Improving lighting
  • And exploring which areas could be redeveloped for homebuilding

Norco House, the former John Lewis building, was recently bought by the company owned by Zakir Issa, the brother of the billionaire brothers who own Asda.

It’s unclear what its future will hold after reports surfaced in the Press and Journal of a community bid to take on the bottom floor of the building for a North-east produce market.

It looks like the park could now be built outside Norco House on George Street itself.
