Yekemi Otaru, Co-Founder and Director of Doqaru, has launched African clothing company Yo Couture in Aberdeen. Yo Couture believes in the power of looking and feeling beautiful through bold designs and bright colours, helping you to stand out from the crowd in the Granite City.
Sustainability and ethics are at the heart of Yo Couture, with small limited edition pieces that are made to be treasured and worn time and time again. All the pieces are made from Ankara fabric which is ethically sourced by local businesswomen in Ghana and Nigeria. Ankara fabric designs are made in small quantities, meaning only a few pieces of clothing can be made from each fabric, making each piece of clothing extra special.

Yo Couture held it’s first pop up shop in Café Society on the 28th November to showcase the launch of the Celebration collection. Over 40 people attended, all wanting to hear more about the brand and see the clothing first hand. Following the success of the event, two more pop up shops have been planned for early next year, one in the city centre in January and one in Aberdeenshire in February.
Speaking about her inspiration for starting the brand Yekemi explained “My friend and I started Yo Couture because we both know what it’s like to have a busy life with family and work. What you wear could give you the buzz you need to overcome the day ahead. We both also have strong African roots. So when the opportunity came to brighten up Aberdeen (and the world) and also support African businesses, we jumped at it!”
