The North East has solemnly marked the 37th anniversary of the Piper Alpha disaster, in which 167 men tragically lost their lives.

Families, friends, colleagues, and representatives from the oil and gas industry gathered at the Hazelhead Park memorial on Sunday to pay their respects and reflect together.

Flowers were laid at the memorial statue, which bears the names of those who perished in the catastrophic North Sea platform fire that occurred overnight between 6 and 7 July 1988.

Paying tribute, the RMT union posted on social media: “RMT remembers. Today marks the 37th anniversary of the Piper Alpha disaster that claimed the lives of 165 offshore oil and gas workers and two seafarers who were part of the emergency response. Our thoughts are with all those that lost a loved one in this awful tragedy.”

The annual remembrance serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of safety in the offshore industry and the enduring legacy of those who were lost.
