The Data Lab, Scotland’s innovation centre for data and artificial intelligence, has signed the lease on new office space and appointed a business development manager to help drive growth through data science in the north east market.

Moving to ONE Tech Hub will play a key role in establishing the organisation’s presence in the heart of Aberdeen’s tech community and provide a springboard for it to continue building new relationships and partnerships with firms across the north east.

Cameron Gordon has been appointed business development manager and will use his network and experience to drive the Innovation Centre’s ambitious plans in the region.

Joining from Aberdeen-based firm, IFB, with an engineering background and enthusiasm for industry and private sector collaboration, Cameron will complement the wider team’s existing expertise to raise the profile of digital and data throughout Scotland.

Aberdeen, historically seen as the oil and gas hub for the UK, now showcases the potential to be recognised as a future centre for excellence for digital technology, data science and artificial intelligence. Diversification from oil and gas and the north east entrepreneurial spirit are at the forefront of the Granite City’s change in direction. The Data Lab believes Aberdeen could be the next case study for growth through data science.

In addition to working with the region’s oil and gas companies, the firm is seeking to engage with a range of private and public sector organisations, including renewables and construction to collaborate and help businesses recognise and utilise data technology to foster innovation, build skills and grow talent.

The Data Lab has plans to continue to grow its Aberdeen team in the months ahead, with further appointments in the pipeline.

Jude McCorry, Head of Business Development at The Data Lab, said: “Cameron is a fantastic addition to The Data Lab team and his motivation and enthusiasm for collaboration with industry is extremely valuable to us. Aberdeen has huge potential for The Data Lab and I’m thrilled we have the support of Cameron to drive forward our ambitious growth plans in the city.”

Cameron Gordon, Business Development Manager for Aberdeen, added: “There is a thriving market in Aberdeen with a multitude of diverse sectors and combined with high-growth potential, makes for an exciting time as I join the vibrant team at The Data Lab. The focus on collaboration with industry to better harness the power of data is a unique one and I look forward to working with public and private sector industries to drive forward growth to support The Data Lab in its north east efforts.”
