ABERDEEN-based composite repair company, Engineered Composite Solutions (ECS), has launched a new eco-friendly composite repair system for the energy industry.  Manufactured from 70% plant oil, FutureWrap Bio will allow operators to carry out pipe repairs in a more sustainable manner.

FutureWrap Bio has been under development by ECS for the last 12 months, following rigorous development and key qualification tests.  Until now, the industry has used composite repair systems that are typically manufactured using hydrocarbon-based feedstock with very few, if any, alternatives available.  FutureWrap Bio is thought to be the first of its kind and is manufactured using 70% plant oil for its epoxy system, making it more environmentally sustainable than other composite repair systems.  All tests conducted by ECS have proven the plant-based system to be equally as durable and strong as alternatives.

This latest development by ECS was the brainchild of company Director and composite repair expert, Dr Simon Frost.  He comments: “Given the current global conditions, there is a strong drive to source materials from other feedstocks, so we are delighted to have come up with a solution that is just as good as the hydrocarbon alternatives.  As well as helping the environment, this product will help our clients meet their net-zero targets.  The feedback so far has been extremely positive and we’re looking forward to rolling it the product out.”

ECS was established in 2019, when it launched FutureWrap, a range of composite repair solutions that use the latest design, resins, and technology to give long-lasting results for composite repairs. The company is committed to innovation and will be continuing to monitor the development of plant oil-based epoxy resin systems, which will in turn be incorporated into future products.
