ABERDEEN City Council has approved plans for a segregated bike lane running the entire length of Union Street.

The local authority debated the issue in-depth in the Town House, with Labour arguing for pedestrianisation and the Conservatives arguing to scrap both bus gates and cycle lanes.

It was the SNP and Liberal Democrats who got their wish though, with the door remaining open for future lanes on Guild Street and Market Street, while a bus gate through Castlegate is also an option for easier access to the beach boulevard.

Council officials, who recommended the bike lane plan, think the £100m spend on overhauling the road could return £500m in the city’s economy.
