A north east group which encourages men to get together socially to take up new hobbies and support the local community has officially opened its doors.

Portsoy Men’s Shed was established in December 2024, going on to lease a former bakery and shop in The Square in the town as its meeting place earlier this year.

Volunteer members spent time reorganising the premises and installing machinery and tools, as well as fitting out the shop area for selling local handmade craft items, before officially opening the doors on Saturday 11 October.

Lord Lieutenant of Banffshire, Andrew Simpson, cut the ribbon to officially declare the shed and adjoining shop open.

The celebration event offered the local community an opportunity to view the premises and hear more about the group’s aims and objectives, as well as take part in various fundraising activities and games, and enjoy the light refreshments on offer. Portsoy Pipe Band also entertained the visitors.

Chairman of Portsoy Men’s Shed, Richard Smith, commented: “We are delighted to finally open the doors to the shed, which will provide a hub for local men to gather, socialise and share skills and interests.  We have over 40 members already signed up, with varying interests and skills including woodwork, metalwork, restoration and even cart building.  We welcome anyone who would like to join us, you don’t need a particular skillset or interest, just come along, have a coffee and see what the members are doing.”

The group has already gained momentum in the local community, with members undertaking various maintenance and landscaping activities to benefit the town and local organisations.

The Men’s Shed concept started in Australia and has since spread across the globe with the purpose of offering men of all ages a place where they can talk and pursue new hobbies towards tackling loneliness and social isolation.

Anyone interested in becoming a member of Portsoy Men’s Shed can visit the shed, find details on their Facebook page or email [email protected]
