Councillors today (Tuesday 17 February) congratulated staff and pupils at Oldmachar Academy for a positive report following an inspection by His Majesty’s Inspectors of Education in November last year.

After visiting classes, talking with staff, parents and carers, partners and pupils the inspectors highlighted strengths in the school’s work.

Councillor Martin Greig, the Convener of Aberdeen City Council’s Education and Children’s Services Committee, said: ““This positive report reflects the effective and caring leadership of head teacher Joanne Hesford and her team. It is reassuring that staff and pupils have together built up a real sense of teamwork. They have created a school community where everyone wants to support and help each other. I am very grateful for the shared commitment as it means all can benefit and thrive.”

Councillor Jessica Mennie, the committee’s Vice-Convener, said: “This excellent inspection report highlights the great leadership and staff at Oldmachar Academy. There is a real sense pride among staff and pupils alike of being part of the school community.”

The report highlighted the following strengths:

.• Young people are engaged, articulate, and welcoming. They are proud to be members of the Oldmachar Academy community. They demonstrate the school values well in their everyday contributions to the life of the school.

• The highly regarded headteacher, ably supported by senior and middle leaders, provides effective leadership to the school. This is leading to improvements in young people’s wellbeing and learning experiences.

• Staff support young people’s wellbeing very effectively through a range of carefully considered approaches. A strong and embedded approach to wellbeing is supporting improvements for outcomes, including achievements, for young people.

• Staff know young people very well as learners and have built highly respectful and supportive relationships with them. As a result, young people engage very well in classes and are clear about their next steps in learning.
