This evening (Monday 25 November) will see a march through Aberdeen city centre to raise awareness of the issue of violence against women.
The Reclaim the Night march, organised by Aberdeen Women’s Alliance, is just one of many such women-only marches taking place across the world to begin 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence – a global campaign that runs until 10 December 2024 – World Human Rights Day.
The march sets off from outside Aberdeen Art Gallery at 6pm, and heads along Belmont Street and Union Street before ending outside Common Sense at the top of Union Terrace.
Councillor Miranda Radley, the Convener of Aberdeen City Council’s Communities, Housing and Public Protection committee, said: “Sadly, the problem of violence against women and girls, and the gender inequality which is a direct cause of it, is still very much an issue both in this country and across the globe. That is why I am proud to lend my support to Reclaim the Night and the wider campaign.
“The Council has undertaken significant work in providing registered safe spaces at the Art Gallery and Aberdeen Maritime Museum and providing an online training programme developed by Scottish Women’s Aid and Equally Safe to increase amongst all staff, regardless of gender, the understanding of violence against women and girls, including its causes, impacts, and the available routes to support.”
