Aberdeen’s retail landscape is undergoing a shift as frozen food specialist Farmfoods prepares to close its George Street location this week, paving the way for a new, larger branch in Old Aberdeen. The George Street store is set to cease trading permanently on Sunday, 3 May 2026.
A spokesperson for Farmfoods confirmed the impending closure to Aberdeen Live, stating: “I confirm our shop on George Street, Aberdeen will close this coming Sunday (May 3) after a 50% off all stock closure sale. We’re grateful to all customers who have shopped with us at the site over the years.”
This closure is part of the retailer’s strategic development in the city, which includes the construction of a new branch on Don Street. The forthcoming Don Street store is being developed on the site of a former barracks building, which underwent demolition in November 2025.
In Case You Missed it:
Plans for the new Old Aberdeen store initially encountered resistance due to traffic concerns, leading to an initial refusal. However, planning approval was eventually granted in March 2025. While a precise opening date for the Don Street branch is yet to be formally announced by Farmfoods, the company has indicated that it expects to welcome its first customers this summer.
The transition marks another change in Farmfoods’ Aberdeen footprint. The company previously closed its original Woodside store, recognised as the first Farmfoods outlet to open in the UK in the 1970s, back in February 2025. Despite these changes, Farmfoods maintains a presence in the region with existing outlets on Lang Stracht and in the nearby towns of Inverurie and Stonehaven.
Farmfoods can trace its origins back to Aberdeen as a meat processing business established in 1954, and has since grown to operate over 300 stores nationwide. The company has recently focused on opening larger stores and enhancing its non-food offerings, with plans announced in May 2024 to open 20 to 30 new stores annually across the UK.
