Robert Gordon University has opened recruitment for a new Lay Chair of its Board of Governors, seeking a senior leader to help steer the governance of Scotland’s leading modern university. The appointment comes as RGU continues to push ahead with its Roadmap 2030 ambitions and strengthen its position in the higher education sector.
The university, recently named Higher Education Institution of the Year at the Herald Higher Education Awards, said it is looking for a candidate with significant leadership and governance experience across business, industry, the public sector, healthcare, finance, energy, higher education or the voluntary sector. RGU added that it wants a diverse field of applicants whose experience will support the Board’s strategic oversight and good governance.
Principal and Vice-Chancellor Professor Steve Olivier said the university has “a clear sense of purpose and an ambitious vision for the future”.
“Through Roadmap 2030, we are working towards becoming the UK’s leading work-integrated university, building on our strengths in employability, partnership and innovation,” he said.
“The Board has a crucial role in overseeing the University’s strategic direction and ensuring robust governance, and we are seeking a Lay Chair who can lead that work with integrity, insight and sound judgement.”
He added: “This is an opportunity to contribute to an institution that is delivering real impact for students, employers and communities, while helping ensure RGU remains well positioned to achieve its long-term ambitions.”
Current Lay Chair Colin Hunter, whose term is due to end following the appointment process, said serving in the role had been “a privilege”.

The role carries an annual honorarium of £22,000 and an estimated commitment of around 50 days a year. Applications close on Friday 11 September 2026.
