THE Scottish Government has declared its intention to start buying new trains to replace its Intercity High Speed Train (HST) fleet, which runs several lines to and from the North-east.
Worries about the safety of the HST fleet emerged after the tragic derailment of the Carmont train near Stonehaven in 2020, resulting in the death of three individuals.

A probe into the crash discovered that the trains “pre-date a number of modern standards that are relevant to train behaviour in derailments and collisions” but were known to have a “good safety standard”.
The Intercity fleet is in operation on routes connecting Aberdeen, Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Inverness.
ScotRail will take charge of the procurement process on behalf of Transport Scotland.
