A major new force has emerged in Scotland’s technology services sector following a series of strategic acquisitions that have transformed Aberdeen-based Converged Communication Solutions into a comprehensive digital services group. The formation of the Converged Solutions Group represents the culmination of an aggressive two-year expansion strategy that has consolidated four specialist technology companies under one umbrella.

The newly integrated group brings together Converged Communication Solutions, IFB, Converged Rural Broadband, and Scot-Tech Fire & Security, creating what industry observers describe as one of Scotland’s most comprehensive technology services providers. With a combined workforce of 63 employees and turnover approaching £10 million, the group now offers end-to-end digital solutions ranging from cybersecurity and connectivity to physical security systems.

The consolidation began in August 2023 when Converged Communication Solutions acquired Aberdeen Technical Services (ATS), immediately rebranding it as Scot-Tech Fire & Security to extend the company’s reach into physical security systems. This was followed by the acquisition of Caleycom in late 2023, which was rebranded as Converged Rural Broadband to address Scotland’s rural connectivity challenges.

The most significant move came in February 2025 with the acquisition of IFB (Internet for Business), Aberdeen’s other major internet service provider, after the 30-year-old company entered administration. The deal, completed through a pre-packed administration arrangement, saved all 15 IFB jobs and united the region’s two largest internet service providers.

“This acquisition is a natural fit, uniting two local businesses with a shared passion for using digital technology to drive business success,” said Neil Christie, Chief Technology Officer of Converged Communication Solutions. “IFB’s expertise in providing connectivity solutions perfectly complements our enhanced business offering, meaning customers will benefit from an even greater range of services.”

The consolidated group now offers what Christie describes as “the full package of security both online and offline,” spanning internet connectivity, managed IT services, cybersecurity, telephony, rural broadband solutions, and physical security systems. This integrated approach addresses a growing market demand for single-source technology providers capable of managing complex digital infrastructure requirements.

Converged Rural Broadband, operating from the former Caleycom business, serves over 500 customers across Scotland’s rural communities using point-to-point wireless technology capable of gigabit data transfer. The service qualifies for the Scottish Government’s R100 broadband voucher scheme, providing up to £5,000 to help deliver superfast broadband to homes and businesses without planned commercial deployment.

Scot-Tech Fire & Security combines 25 years of experience from Aberdeen Technical Services with Converged’s broader technology capabilities, serving clients across Scotland with high-tech security systems and fire safety solutions.

Leadership and Heritage

The consolidation represents a homecoming of sorts for Christie, who began his career at IFB before founding Converged Communication Solutions 20 years ago. This personal connection facilitated the smooth integration of the companies and preservation of customer relationships.

“Co-founded by Chairman, John Michie, IFB has been at the forefront of delivering innovative connectivity and IT solutions to businesses for nearly three decades,” said Graeme Gordon, IFB’s Chief Executive Officer. “Joining forces with Converged allows us to take our service offering to the next level, giving our customers access to an even broader portfolio of solutions.”

Market Position and Future Outlook

The formation of the Converged Solutions Group occurs against a backdrop of growing optimism in Scotland’s technology sector. Recent business confidence surveys show Scottish firms ranking among the most hopeful in the UK, with 70% expressing confidence in their trading outlook. The Scottish technology sector now contributes £5.9 billion in Gross Value Added to the economy, with digital technologies predicted to grow at 1.5 times the rate of the overall economy until 2029.

Industry analysts suggest the consolidation trend will continue as technology companies seek scale advantages in an increasingly competitive market. The integration of artificial intelligence, cybersecurity demands, and digital transformation requirements is driving demand for comprehensive service providers capable of managing complex technology ecosystems.

With its expanded capabilities and geographic reach, the Converged Solutions Group is positioned to capitalize on Scotland’s growing technology market and the increasing demand for integrated digital services across both urban and rural markets.
