SIEMENS Industrial Turbomachinery Ltd, part of global technology giant Siemens, has cut its travel costs by 28% in six months and reduced vehicles allocated to occasional business travel by a third by replacing its 20-strong pool fleet with 14 dedicated Enterprise Car Club vehicles.

The new vehicles, both cars and vans, are located across two Siemens offices in Lincoln and one site in Aberdeen.

The low-emission and fuel-efficient Enterprise Car Club vehicles are also lowering Siemens’ travel carbon footprint.

Because daily rental is no longer needed to back up pool fleet vehicles, Siemens has achieved considerable savings on delivery and collection charges* and reduced the miles being driven for vehicle deliveries and pick-ups by more than 10,000*.

The new programme meets the four key Siemens objectives of reducing the pool car fleet, reducing costs, improving vehicle utilisation and enhancing its use of digital processes.

Siemens worked closely with Enterprise’s transport consultancy team to support the move to a highly structured car club programme with detailed data analysis on employee travel plans, enabling this successful evolution to the company’s UK travel strategy.

Three Enterprise Car Club Nissan Juke SUVs are based at each of the three Siemens UK locations across Lincoln and Aberdeen, while five Ford Transit and Peugeot Partner vans are sited at the two Siemens offices in Lincoln. All are bookable by the hour or by the day.

Hundreds of Siemens UK employees now book the Enterprise vehicles themselves, either online or using a mobile app, instead of via the fleet team to manage the booking. They use their Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) smart ID cards to book and unlock the car club vehicles, which also allows Siemens to track who is booking the vehicles and for how long.

This creates valuable usage data that is being used to identify opportunities for further efficiencies, for example when employees might book a car club vehicle for eight hours to travel just five miles.

The company has already seen employees change their travel behaviour by using the car club vehicles, with van drivers, in particular, making trips to multiple destinations across Lincoln and beyond.

Once employees join Enterprise Car Club, they can also access any of Enterprise’s growing network of 1,400 on-street vehicles available for rent 24/7, 365 days of the year, in more than 170 cities, towns and communities across the UK. Employees are also entitled to free personal membership for a year. Many Enterprise Car Club vehicles are located at transport hubs or railway stations to make it easier to travel around the UK using public transport.

Wayne Warburton, head of mobility services at Siemens UK, said: “Working with Enterprise is not just saving money, it’s also making our employees more productive and efficient and changing their behaviours. Many will now combine trips to multiple destinations while being able to book the vehicles directly means we’ve been able to reassign the entire fleet team and move them to other work.

“We’re looking at expanding the programme to other sites because of the success it’s already demonstrated. Enterprise has enabled us to move from an unmanaged solution to a managed one and provided exactly the technology-driven car club package we need.”

Adrian Bewley, assistant vice president of business mobility UK & Ireland at Enterprise, added: “Siemens recognised that there was a better way to keep employees mobile across all the company sites around the UK. Many organisations find utilisation on pool vehicles can below, and that there are many hidden costs to managing an owned fleet.

“We worked closely with Siemens to analyse how vehicles were being used and how a better service could be provided with a dedicated on-site car club. The result is better mobility, fewer and shorter journeys and fewer vehicles, leading to reduced costs and a smaller carbon footprint.”

* Cost savings of 28% based on reduced delivery and collection over a six-month period

** Based on the distance between Enterprise branches and Siemens locations and the number of daily rentals including D&C over a six-month period.
