Aberdeen’s culinary scene has been enriched with the arrival of Singh Street, a Punjabi family-style street food restaurant, now open in Union Square Shopping Centre. This marks the brand’s second location, following the success of its first site in Edinburgh’s Bruntsfield Place.

Singh Street brings an authentic taste of Punjabi street food to the city, offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner with a menu that blends traditional flavours with contemporary twists. Signature dishes include tandoori chicken—chargrilled in spiced yoghurt and topped with pomegranate and coriander—and ruby chicken, their take on the classic butter chicken curry, infused with masala-spiced tomato, garlic, and cream.

Adding a Scottish twist, the haggis keema sees traditional Indian keema reinvented with haggis, cooked in turmeric, chilli, peas, and masala spices. Another standout is DJ’s mutton laal mas, a slow-braised mutton dish inspired by the founder’s father, enriched with Kashmiri chilli and garlic for a perfect balance of sweet, spicy, and tangy flavours.

The restaurant’s interior design reflects the vibrancy of Indian street dining, blending traditional influences with bold, modern aesthetics. Created in collaboration with renowned potter and designer Jonathan Adler, the space is bright and colourful, featuring striking art pieces, handcrafted beaded artworks, and playful décor elements like a giant wicker banana and an elephant wall sculpture.

Francesco, general manager of the Aberdeen branch, shared his excitement about the expansion, saying:
“Expanding to Aberdeen felt like a natural step for us. We believe great food brings people together, and we saw an opportunity to introduce our authentic Punjabi street food-inspired dining to a new community. Aberdeen’s growing food scene, along with its appreciation for fresh, high-quality ingredients, made it the perfect fit. Compared to our Edinburgh café, we’ve grown our menu slightly with some exciting new dishes, but our core values remain the same—homemade, family-style dining with bold, vibrant flavours.

He also emphasised Singh Street’s commitment to quality and authenticity, and looking at how Singh Street captures the essence of Indian street dining, he added:
“Experience is very important to us. Many Indian eateries tend to style themselves on a darker, almost colonial-inspired aesthetic, which isn’t our cup of tea! Our cafés are designed to be bright, colourful spaces, reflecting the vibrancy and bold flavours of India. Singh Street’s interiors are rooted in tradition but are adapted for today’s modern communities.”

He continued: “Our founder’s wife works in the design industry and enlisted renowned potter and interior designer Jonathan Adler to create the interiors for Singh Street. Each space takes traditional architecture and adornments and layers in punchy pastel colours, modern furniture, and the irreverent details for which Adler is known—like the giant wicker banana, elephant wall sculpture, and beaded artworks that are made by hand in Peru by specialist artisans. We like to think that the resulting design gives us something unique and exciting, spaces that satisfy both your appetite—and your appetite for design.”

Singh Street operates from 12:00 PM to 10:00 PM Mon-Fri and 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM on weekends. and welcomes guests without the need for reservations. Located on the first level of Union Square Shopping Centre, the restaurant aims to provide a vibrant and welcoming dining experience for both locals and vis;itors.

A visit to taste Indian Street Food

As part of Aberdeen Business News and Larder Magazine, we were invited to experience Singh Street’s menu first-hand. The visit was a fantastic introduction to their bold flavours and warm hospitality.

We sampled a variety of dishes, including poppadoms and chutneys, tandoori paneer, tandoori prawns, aloo chana chaat, hají bhaji, and street-style corn. Each dish was bursting with flavour and perfect for sharing. Sadly, we missed out on the chai-spiced tiramisu this time, but the mango and raspberry sorbets provided a sweet and fruity finish.

Drinks included a mango lassi and a caramel espresso martini mocktail—both outstanding. The mango lassi in particular was a stand out.

With its vibrant décor, welcoming atmosphere, and impeccable service from Francesco and the team, Singh Street is a must-visit for anyone in Aberdeen looking to experience fresh, high-quality Punjabi street food.
