The Lecht Ski Centre, a beloved Scottish winter sports destination, has been saved from potential closure thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign and a new operational strategy.
The resort, which has been facing challenges due to changing weather patterns and financial difficulties, launched a funding campaign earlier this year, appealing to loyal patrons and winter sports enthusiasts.
“We need your help,” the resort had stated in their crowdfunding appeal. “We are asking anyone who has ever come to the Lecht and enjoyed what the Lecht exists for, to donate the cost of a lift pass to help.”
The community’s response was overwhelmingly positive, with the campaign reaching its target and securing the resort’s immediate future.
In addition to the financial boost, the Lecht has announced changes to its operational model to adapt to the changing climate. While specific details of the new deal have not been disclosed, it appears that the resort will be focusing on preserving resources and optimising conditions for the peak skiing months.
The Lecht, known for its beginner-friendly slopes and smooth, grassy terrain, has been a fixture in the Scottish skiing scene since the mid-1970s.
Despite being the smallest ski area in Scotland, it has often provided snow sports opportunities when other resorts were forced to close due to marginal snow cover.
This rescue comes at a crucial time for Scottish ski resorts, as many face challenges due to climate change.
Earlier this year, ski area bosses across Scotland reported that last winter was “a shocker of a year” in terms of conditions, marking the second worst season in the past 50 years.
Managing director Iain Du Pon said: “Simplest way to put it is that the crowdfunding gave us enough working capital to survive the summer.
“And interest in the Lecht showed that the business was viable and allowed us to encourage investment into the business to help us move forward.”
“If the crowdfunding hadn’t been as successful then we wouldn’t be here just now,” he admits.
“Thankfully it raised quite a lot of money – in the tens of thousands – which was fantastic.
“But it also attracted new investors for the business and helped us secure more funding from shareholders and from other people wanting to get involved. Which was really ideal.
“It’s been very much that element that has put the icing on the cake and made sure that we can stay open.”

While the Lecht’s future now seems secure, the resort’s management acknowledges the need for continued adaptation. As one nearby resort stated: “These changes aren’t about cutting back – they’re about survival.”
The Lecht’s successful campaign and new operational strategy may serve as a model for other Scottish ski resorts facing similar challenges in the coming years.
