Shell has issued an apology and pledged to source its oil elsewhere in future, after receiving immense backlash for its actions this weekend.
Shell also declared that they will be closing all their fuel stations in Russia and halting all other operations there. And they are not alone. Other corporations have already followed suit.
The criticism came after Shell bought Russian crude at a massively discounted rate.
Mr van Beurden, head of Shell, stated today that what the company had done was wrong.
“We are acutely aware that our decision last week to purchase a cargo of Russian crude oil… was not the right one and we are sorry.”
The company’s Rexit is expected to take some time during which we can expect other major players to follow their example.
The Ukrainian foreign minister, along with many of Shells’ competitors and customers took to social media to shame the oil giant for its actions this weekend.
Perhaps corporations with dealings in Russia will think twice before making any next steps for now.
