SPARROWS Group (Sparrows), the engineering and maintenance services specialist for the international energy and industrial sectors, has secured an additional contract with India’s Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) to refurbish eight offshore pedestal cranes.

The deal comes off the back of a contract awarded in 2018 to refurbish 21 cranes and will see Sparrows carry out repairs, upgrades and replacement of components to improve reliability and safely extend the life of the cranes for up to 20 years.

Work on the project will start next month and is due to be completed by the end of 2022 with the Sparrows team working on-site, to reduce cost and time of refurbishment, and from Sparrows local facility in Mumbai.

Stewart Mitchell, CEO at Sparrows, said: “In 2018, we were awarded a large scope of work to refurbish 21 of the 100 plus cranes we have supplied to OGNC over the years. As the original equipment manufacturer, we are in a unique position to ensure the quality of parts and components and the long-term integrity of the cranes. Cranes are a vital and safety critical piece of equipment on any platform and through this refurbishment programme OGNC will be able to extend the life of their fleet in a cost effective and time efficient way.

Following an incredibly successful first campaign, we are pleased to have been awarded more work to continue refurbishment of their assets. This contract highlights not only the high quality, professional and expert service that we have delivered over the last three years, but also OGNC’s commitment to safety and reliability of equipment.”

Sparrows, who has been operating in India for over two decades, employs over 50 people in-country. As well as its own dedicated engineering and design capability, the Mumbai facility offers Sparrows full range of capabilities including specialist engineering, inspection, operations and maintenance services.
