Ian Philips, the host of the event

THE SOCIETY of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Aberdeen Section will host a talk this Wednesday focusing on the oil and gas industry’s future in a net-zero world.

The presentation will be given by Ian Phillips, Oil & Gas Innovation Centre (OGIC) CEO and former Chairman of SPE Aberdeen, and will feature an opening address from SPE International President Shauna Noonan – one of her only speaking engagements in Aberdeen during her tenure.

The presentation will begin by setting the energy industry in context, highlighting how a growing population is resulting in growing energy demand, and how the remaining availability of oil and gas is fit for several hundred years.

Ian will go on to discuss the overarching climate change picture, with a brief review of the science and the concept of a carbon budget, in other words – how much time do we have left?

The talk, which will encourage lively debate around the topic of energy transition, will examine what the oil and gas industry is doing to achieve net zero, including a review of alternative energy sources, and the impact that net zero is likely to make on our lifestyles.

A Chartered Petroleum Engineer and Fellow of the UK Energy Institute, Ian has over 30 years’ experience in the upstream oil and gas industry, including 18 years with oil operating companies and six years with a major service company.

In 2007 he became a founding Director of CO2DeepStore Limited, the first company specifically seeking to deliver CCS.

Ahead of the presentation, Ian said: “This is a great opportunity to hear about how far the oil and gas industry has come and importantly, what can be, and is already being done to achieve more. It is important that we collaborate to tackle the energy transition challenge together, and we hope this presentation and debate helps to inspire new thinking and action.”

The presentation, which includes a networking buffet, takes place on Wednesday, 22 January from 6pm at the Sandman Hotel in Aberdeen. Tickets are available at www.spe-uk.org/aberdeen/events
