SPEED camera units are to be installed at the Toll of Birness later in July. The north bound A952 will be shut for 4 days.

Scottish Conservative candidate for Gordon and Buchan, Harriet Cross, who visited the accident blackspot last week has reacted to the news, commenting: “At the Toll of Birness, the dangerous layout of the junction is the biggest problem – not solely the speed of drivers.

“While there is no doubt cameras will help to reduce speeding, this measure is a sticking plaster to a much wider issue which stretches far beyond that.

“What is really needed to reduce the high number of devastating accidents is for the junction to be made into a roundabout and for the A90 north of Ellon to be dualled.

“The SNP’s broken promises and refusal to upgrade the A90 Toll of Birness is a shameful betrayal to the families whose lives have been impacted by the road which is not fit for purpose.”

Scottish Conservative North East MSP Douglas Lumsden said: “The first priority should be to replace the Toll of Birness junction with a roundabout over installing speed cameras.

“Rather than spending huge amounts of taxpayers’ money on these devices, the SNP government should be concentrating more on getting spades into the ground to make life-saving upgrades to the layout of the road.

“Motorists take their life into their own hands when crossing the junction and I fear this will still be the case when these cameras are installed.

“I, along with my Scottish Conservative colleagues, will continue to push for a roundabout at the Toll of Birness and for the A90 to be dualled north of Ellon to increase safety for North East motorists.”
