The Met Office has confirmed it is closely tracking Storm Erin, a powerful Atlantic system currently classified as a category three hurricane, which could influence UK weather in the coming weeks.

Although the storm is expected to weaken before reaching British shores, forecasters warn that the north-east may experience unsettled conditions, with the possibility of heavy rain and strong winds in the final week of August.

Deputy Chief Meteorologist Stephen Kocher said: “A key feature to watch in the coming days is Hurricane Erin, which is currently to the east of the Bahamas. We are closely monitoring its track, with the possibility of the UK feeling the effects of what would then be ex-hurricane Erin at some point next week.”

The Met Office stressed that there remains considerable uncertainty over Erin’s trajectory, but it could bring a spell of wet and windy weather to parts of Scotland.

Erin has already caused devastation in Cape Verde, where severe winds and flooding forced the evacuation of thousands of residents and resulted in nine fatalities.

For the north-east, current forecasts suggest daytime temperatures will hover around 16°C to 17°C over the coming week, with sunny intervals before conditions are expected to turn more unsettled.
