Supernatural thriller to be set on a North-sea oil rig

AMAZON Prime is creating a supernatural thriller TV series set on a remote North-sea oil rig.

The show, being filmed exclusively in Scotland, is about a group of workers on a platform who are about to return to the mainland “when an eerie fog descends and a mysterious force begins to take hold”.

The Rig is a six-part series which will be streamed in more than 240 counties and territories worldwide, created by new writer David Macpherson and directed by John Strickland, an alum of Line of Duty and Bodyguard.

The series will follow the crew of the fictional Kishorn Bravo, stationed off the Scottish coast, which will see them cut off from all communication from the outside world.

As they try to discover what’s behind the all-enveloping fog, “bonds are broken, allegiances formed and generational fault lines exposed” as they deal with forces “beyond their imagination”, Amazon said in a statement.

Production on the series, filmed in Edinburgh, will start next year, according to Screen Scotland.

Georgia Brown, director of European Amazon Originals for Prime Video, said: “The Rig is a brilliant story, expertly told, in the most dramatic of settings.

“It asks searching questions about nature and the environment, about what it takes to survive and to be human, which feels very pertinent to the world we are living in now.”

The series is being created by the Wild Mercury Production company.

Derek Wax, managing director, said: “The Rig is a character-driven, epic thriller, full of heart-grabbing action and bold, original ideas, and we are delighted to be working with Amazon Prime Video in bringing it to life.

“David Macpherson captures life on a North Sea oil rig with extraordinary authenticity and it’s been exciting to work with him, director John Strickland and our creative team in realising the scale and vision of this world.”
