In what is set to be a relaxed and honest conversation about quietly normalising life without alcohol, TEDx speaker Sarah Rochester will take part in SOBR Bar’s next “Talks at the Bar” on Thursday 28th May at 7pm.
Now four years alcohol free, Sarah will reflect on her journey, with a Q&A session at the end of her talk.
Having begun her speaking career in 2022, when she first took to the stage at TEDx in Aberdeen, Sarah has been on a mission to tell people that they do not need a reason to stop drinking.
The third speaker to “talk at the bar” at SOBR, Sarah follows Kim Lam who discussed the challenges of waiting for a lung transplant in April. One of Kim’s main points was that inclusive, alcohol free spaces such as SOBR really matter to people in this situation.
Back in February, Jade Auld of @Scottishandsober, kicked off SOBR’s talks initiative, reflecting on her journey to wellness since becoming sober in 2021.
Aberdonian influencer Mikey Banks is lined up for a talk on 30 July. He too has an inspiring story to tell on how he conquered addiction and is supporting his mental health.
“We are very excited to welcome Sarah to the bar,” said SOBR owner, Kate Kenyon. “Our talks series has been proving popular so far. We’ve had such a mix of people come to listen, from those who are “sober curious”, people like Kim who can’t drink for medical reasons, and people who are in an early stage in battling addiction, really appreciating all the advice from those who have been there.”
“These talks are an engaging forum where everybody’s views are welcome. Hopefully through talking we can help people find a way through.”
“Sarah will discuss what changes after year one of sobriety, what the milestones feel like and how those looking to stop drinking can navigate things, such as socialising and parenting,” added Kate.
“As we know, a great deal of life in Scotland revolves around alcohol.”
Commenting on her forthcoming talk, Sarah said: “I am really looking forward to sitting down with a bunch of like-minded folk, discussing how being alcohol-free evolves and changes. I have had some really interesting experiences now that this has become a part of my life over the past five years, and I am hopeful that this talk will show people that the future isn’t as scary as it can sometimes feel”.
Kate Kenyon finished by saying: “We’ve been blown away by the honesty and forthrightness of our speakers so far. I can only thank them for taking part in the series. If anybody would like to get in touch to become one of our speakers later in the year, we welcome any enquiries.”
