With Aberdeen snowfall continuing, Aberdeen City Council has released tips and useful links when dealing with winter weather.

  1. Keep up-to-date with weather forecast so you can plan accordingly – Weather and climate change – Met Office
  1. Create an emergency plan in case of bad weather causing electricity blackouts or gas stoppages from www.ready.scot – and remember to keep the plan handy in case you need it in a hurry
  1. Ensure you have adequate flood prevention measures. This is especially important if you live in an area prone to flooding. Help is at Information about flooding | Aberdeen City Council
  1. If you are vulnerable or elderly, prepare for bad weather by ensuring you have enough essential food and medication beforehand. If you need something urgently during bad weather, as a relative, neighbour or friend to fetch it for you.
  1. If you have vulnerable neighbours or relatives, check and see if they need any essential food or drink during periods of bad weather.
  1. Winter travel advice – you should only make essential journeys in severe weather. If you decide that your journey is really necessary, follow the advice below and be prepared. Have a Plan B for your journey if possible, such as take the bus or work from home.
  1. Drivers – plan your journey, and allow more time than you would normally. If possible, travel on main roads which will have been gritted.
  1. Pedestrians – plan your journey – check if the pavements on your usual route are due to be gritted. Take your time and allow yourself longer than usual to get to where you are going
  1. Cyclists – take extra time to plan your journey – if possible travel on main roads which will have been gritted.
  1. Consider salting your neighbourhood roads and pavements if you are able, in times of snow or ice as the Council cannot be everywhere around the city at the same time!
