The North Sea Transition Taskforce, spearheaded by former Permanent Secretary of the UK Government Philip Rycroft, convened in Aberdeen this week to evaluate research findings and deliberate on its forthcoming actions.
The independent taskforce was proposed by the Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce in 2023, and was established to outline a structured transition aimed at ensuring the long-term viability of the North Sea and protecting tens of thousands of jobs.

This initiative was subsequently followed by the release of a white paper on the topic, which was introduced at the Labour Party Conference in Liverpool in September last year.
The group brings together the knowledge of supply chain companies, labour unions, environmental organisations, and energy policy specialists to achieve the broadest possible agreement on the best path forward for the UK to become a leader in this sector.
During Monday’s meeting, members of the team explored various developments related to the topic, assessed next steps, and reflected on insights gleaned from numerous stakeholder interviews and primary research data. Throughout the day, they also toured Aberdeen South Harbour, ETZ Ltd, D2Zero, and High Performance Robotics to learn about the opportunities—and numerous challenges—facing the region’s outstanding supply chain as it navigates the shift toward a more sustainable energy future.
