Visitors to Union Square are invited to pause, unwind and treat themselves this weekend as the shopping centre launched its “Treat Yourself” wellness event in celebration of Mental Health Awareness Week.

Taking place on Friday 16 and Saturday 17 May from 11am to 4pm, the interactive pop-up featured four immersive zones designed to promote relaxation, positivity and self-care. Shoppers could take part in a range of wellbeing-themed activities across the mall, from writing kind words for strangers to enjoying hand massages and winning prizes.

The four zones – Take a Listen, Take a Moment, Take a Treat, and Take a Breath – encouraged participants to connect with their senses and slow down amid the busy shopping environment. Activities included sound therapy through headsets, a compliment exchange station, wellness quizzes with instant rewards, and free workshops such as lavender sachet making and massage therapy.

Speaking to Aberdeen Business News, Ellie, a team member supporting the event, described the atmosphere as uplifting:
“We’ve got a lovely affirmation station where people can take a message and leave one for a stranger, which is really special. There’s also a sensory sound area and a relaxation zone for massages – which I’m dying to try myself!”
Ellie added that her section – the wellness quiz and prize zone – had been a hit with visitors:
“I ask a few simple wellbeing questions, and then you get to open a mystery box and win a treat. It’s all about adding a little joy to someone’s day.”

Asked what she hoped people would take away from the event, Ellie said:
“Honestly, I just hope the sunshine outside can be brought into people. That might sound cheesy, but there’s not enough positivity in the world. If we can bring a few sunny rays into people’s souls and make them feel good – that’s what it’s all about.”
As for her own top tip to de-stress?

“Exercise is my best friend. I go to the gym every morning – not for anything crazy, just enough to calm my mind. It really is good for the soul.”
The “Treat Yourself” initiative is part of Union Square’s wider commitment to community wellbeing, using public spaces to promote health, happiness and human connection. With activities proving popular across both days, the centre’s celebration of mental health looks set to become a crowd-pleasing favourite in years to come.

The wellness event continues at Union Square on Saturday 17 May, offering another chance for visitors to unwind, connect and enjoy a moment of calm. With free workshops, uplifting activities and the chance to win a treat or two, it’s a feel-good way to spend part of your weekend, and a timely reminder to take care of both mind and body.
