THE University of Aberdeen is trying to block plans to transform a crumbling city centre building into luxury student flats.
Dunbar-based student flat operator Bauhaus – run by businessman Simon Flame – is seeking permission to convert a disused bank on 17-19 Union Terrace into 28 apartments.
The former TSB, on the corner of Diamond Place and Union Terrace, has a banking hall at ground floor level, upper floor offices and a basement.
A 40-seater cinema would be created in the basement, along with a gym and laundry.
However, University of Aberdeen’s director of estates and facilities, Morag Beers, has sent the letter of objection to the council, saying the city doesn’t need more student accommodation.
“It is our position that there is no need for student accommodation at this location and we object on that basis,” she said.
Aberdeen University claims that Bauhaus Ltd has failed to show there is a need for the extra student accommodation.
Ms Beers added: “In our view, this is simply an assertion, and the applicant has not provided any evidence.
“In the absence of that information, the council cannot be satisfied … and it should be refused.”
