VisitAberdeenshire leads North-east’s preparations for billion-dollar cruise market

05/12/2017

VisitAberdeenshire, as part of the Cruise Aberdeenshire Working Group, will host a third cruise-ready workshop on 7 December aimed at preparing the North-east for the arrival of the global billion-dollar cruise industry, ahead of the new Aberdeen South Harbour opening in 2020.

VisitAberdeenshire ran two cruise workshops in October to engage with local tourism businesses which may feature on cruise passenger’s itinerary plans. The third workshop will this time focus on logistics and transport, a key area identified by the Cruise Aberdeenshire Steering Group.

Elaine Booth, business engagement manager at VisitAberdeenshire says, “On the ground transport is one of the biggest logistical challenges we face as we prepare the region to become a world class cruise destination. On some of the larger ships we could have up to 5,000 passengers and crew that require transport to get them from the South Harbour onwards to their destination. This workshop aims to provide the vital information local transport companies require to allow them to begin to make plans to adequately service this market.”

Chris Foy, chief executive of VisitAberdeenshire says, “We have a fantastic opportunity to establish Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire as a must see, must visit cruise destination. But to make the most of the opportunity, and to ensure we’re ready for the 2020 completion of the harbour expansion, we must start the preparation now. This is why these workshops and the collaboration of local businesses who together form the Cruise Aberdeenshire Steering Group is so important. We are committed to developing the North-east’s international cruise product at VisitAberdeenshire, and in recognition of this we are employing a full-time project manager to focus exclusively on the cruise sector.”
