SEEKING support can be a difficult thing for most people to do. Whether you are a victim of abuse – or have been in the past, you may not know who to turn to. Suddenly, life can start to feel very challenging. However, no abuse victim should have to suffer in silence. There are a few support systems available here in the UK – that this guide will outline – to help you get the support you deserve. We will cover what these are – while also discussing some options you can take down the legal route, like a non-molestation order.

Charities

There are several charities in the UK that offer life-saving services to people suffering from abuse. Women’s Aid, Refuge, and Victim Support are some examples. The support workers involved with these charities aim to give both women and men who are victims of abuse guidance on how they can seek refuge in a safer environment. You can find a list of charities that offer support for abuse online. You can contact charities of this nature via live chats, email, or telephone. Choose an option you are most comfortable with.

The Family Court

Although taking your case to the family court can be a daunting thought. For many, it is something they must do to protect both themselves and their children. If you have a partner – or family member who has displayed threatening behaviour towards you and your children, you can apply for a non-molestation order through the family court. This injunction prevents your partner (or former partner) from inflicting harm on both you and your children. It can give abuse victims the safety and support they need. You can learn more about how a non-molestation order works through organisations like National Legal Service Solicitors.

Online Forums

Talking to friends and family about your situation can be very challenging for most abuse victims. If you feel hesitant to share your story, there are more discreet ways you can seek support. Online forums are a valuable resource – where you can speak to other abuse victims over the internet. If you are not ready to share your story with others, you can read these forums to seek support and advice on how to deal with your situation. You can find abuse support forums through a quick Google search. Often, many domestic abuse charities offer this function through their websites.

Helplines

Speaking to someone in-person about abuse can be very difficult. You may worry about what the other person’s reaction will be. If you struggle to get your words out when face to face with your loved one or support worker, you can reach out to someone over the phone instead. This can be a helpful first step to make, and you can make the call at a time when you feel most comfortable talking about your story. You can access these helplines online. You will find some of them operate 24/7, giving you total control to pick up the phone at a time that suits you.
