PEOPLE do not have to pre-book to go to the much-loved Winter Gardens in Duthie Park from today.

The booking system was in place for the first few weeks of reopening due to coronavirus advice that facilities should ensure people do not bunch together. People are reminded that Scottish Government guidance is that people should keep their distance from others not in their group, and that track and trace is still in place at the facility.

The Winter Gardens were closed last March as the first lockdown happened and were reopened last month. There has been an increase in the popularity of all the city’s parks and green spaces so it would have been unable to cope with the additional volume of people as well as the physical spacing restrictions.

Aberdeen City Council operational delivery convener Councillor Philip Bell said: “It’s great people can just go to the Winter Gardens without booking again as it is one of our most popular facilities.

“Our botanical gardens have a varied and interesting plants ranging from the very dry arid section with dozens of cacti to the tropical garden and is one of the most visited public indoor plant collections in Scotland.”

In the 1900s, the Winter Gardens was added to Duthie Park but unfortunately it was severely damaged in 1969 due to extreme gales so was demolished and replaced with the current beautiful glass building.

The winter opening hours for the facility, which can host weddings, wedding photos and other events, are 12pm to 4.30pm daily.
