Craig is also chair of OGUK’s Diversity and Inclusion Task Group, and is a member of the Energy Leaders’ Coalition, a group of executive leaders in the UK committed to driving diversity in their organisations and their sectors more broadly.

He has supported AFBE-UK since 2020 and in May 2021 delivered the keynote speech at AFBE-UK Scotland’s Transition, an event which helps to equip young people for the world of work.

Dr Ollie Folayan, chair of AFBE-UK Scotland, said: “Craig is not only a leader within an international and diverse company, he’s a recognised figure across industry and we are honoured that he has agreed to join the advisory board.

“Craig can offer a great deal of insight from a corporate level, combined with his mission to effect change across the whole energy sector which can provide AFBE-UK with invaluable guidance when it comes to preparing our strategy for the engineering sector.”

Craig Shanaghey, President of Wood’s Operations across EMEA, added: “I am humbled to have been invited by Ollie and the AFBE-UK team to join their advisory board.

“As the energy industry evolves to deliver on net-zero commitments, it is imperative that the sector attracts, retains and develops the diverse talent that will be so critical to making that possible.

“AFBE-UK is an organisation committed to doing just that as they continue on their quest for a more diverse and equitable environment for STEM talent. I can see the work that the organisation is doing to deliver a positive difference and I am energised by the opportunity to play a small part in their journey.”

A chartered engineer with 34 years’ multi-industry experience, Craig is a fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers as well as a fellow of the Energy Institute.

The advisory board meets the AFBE-UK’s executive board twice a year to provide guidance and support.

Other advisory board members are Stephen Hart, managing director of Pall Europe Limited; Dr James Smith CBE, former chair of the Carbon Trust; Chi Onwurah, MP for Newcastle upon Tyne Central; Aberdeen-based Denis Pinto, managing director of Caledonian Flow Systems; Professor David Mba, deputy vice-chancellor of research, knowledge exchange and enterprise at the University of the Arts London (UAL); Dr Safia Barikzai, associate professor at London South Bank University’s School of Engineering; Sandra Kerr CBE, race equality director at Business in the Community; Dr Patrick Clarke OBE, director of network operations at UK Power Networks; and Myrtle Dawes, solutions centre director at Aberdeen’s Net Zero Technology Centre.

Aberdeen-based AFBE-UK Scotland supports young people, particularly those from black and minority ethnic (BME) backgrounds, with career aspirations in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

It has worked with thousands of young people since it first launched north of the border in 2011. The organisation is part of AFBE-UK, which is based in London.

Wood is one of AFBE-UK’s 55 corporate members that include the Mercedes F1 team, Subsea 7, The University of Aberdeen and the RAF.

AFBE-UK Scotland provides mentoring programmes. This includes its schools programme NextGen, where industry leaders and professionals give advice to pupils through entertaining events; Transition, where industry leaders help aspiring engineering professionals to enter the job market; and Real Projects, where industry professionals share their knowledge and expertise.
