JFD is a leading underwater operations specialist that has developed means of safeguarding the lives of divers and submariners.

The group has a major presence in the North Sea.

This contract builds on the company’s 20-year relationship with the Royal Navy, with the company saying it reflected “JFD’s breadth of expertise and commitment to capability development and safety improvements in military diving.”

Under the contract, JFD will be responsible for maintaining the Royal Navy’s life-support diving equipment, which includes JFD’s innovative Shadow rebreather system, a specialised underwater closed-circuit life support system.

Danny Gray, JFD managing director, said: “JFD has consistently exceeded the high availability targets set under the previous diving equipment support contract with the Royal Navy, and our proven track record over the past 20 years showcases our unrivalled experience and delivery offering.

“We look forward to this continued industry partnership with the Royal Navy going forward.”

James Fisher has a number of other entities in the north-east, including Fisher Offshore in Oldmeldrum and the National Hyperbaric Centre in Aberdeen.

In August the company reported that it had seen profits fall by more than a quarter as coronavirus stifled world trade and the energy sector.

In its interim results for the six months to 30 June, it reported underlying pre-tax profits down from £20.9m to £15.1m.

Total revenue was down 10% from £286.9m to £258.1m.
