AS PART of a series of planned visits, members of the Anti-Poverty and Inequality Committee visited Aberdeen Cyrenians last week (31 January) to hear from staff and volunteers.
Aberdeen Cyrenians is a local charity and social care provider, supporting some of the most vulnerable people in communities across the city facing homelessness, crisis and addiction.
Aberdeen City Council Co Leader Councillor Christian Allard said: “Third sector organisations like Aberdeen Cyrenians have helped members of our committee and Council staff to hear first-hand the vital partnership working taking place every day across our city.
“It has been incredibly interesting to hear from the staff and volunteers and learn about how they are continuously working to shift perceptions and change the outlook on homelessness and vulnerability in our city.”
Vice Convener Councillor Desmond Bouse said: “Aberdeen Cyrenians plays a vital role in our community and has done for over 50 years since it started as a soup kitchen run by Aberdeen University students.
“The visit was beneficial for us as a committee to hear how they continue to support people facing difficulties with isolation and trauma as well as homelessness.”
Jennifer McAughtrie, Head of Services at Aberdeen Cyrenians said: “We welcomed the opportunity to meet and provide insight of the diverse range of services we provide and would like to thank all committee members for their time.
“We valued their engagement with our front-line staff and volunteers, hearing directly of the complexities faced by people living in our local communities. Working in collaboration with key stakeholders is crucial in identifying pathways of support to empower individuals in their journey towards a brighter tomorrow.”
The Committee regularly visits local third sector organisations and partners to explore the work they are doing to support individuals and families across our city. The visit to Aberdeen Cyrenians follows previous visits to Aberdeen Foyer, Cfine and Shmu Radio.
