THE Mither Kirk – part of Aberdeen’s Kirk of St Nicholas – is to be taken over by an Edinburgh-based arts charity next month, who want to help “reignite” Union Street.
The historic site dates back to the 12th century, though works on the structure that dominates the city’s skyline didn’t begin until the 18th century.
Edinburgh Palette is set to make its first venture into Aberdeen in an effort to “reignite the high street”, although are keeping hushed about their full plans for the A-listed building.
The Church of Scotland ended worship in the West Kirk in December 2020, however some ceremonies, including an annual remembrance service for oil and gas workers who died offshore, still take place.
It’s unclear what exactly Edinburgh Palette have planned for the space, however their St Margaret’s House facility in Edinburgh houses 200 studios for various arts, including a theatre, ceramics studio and meeting rooms, and is currently at capacity.
