Kicking off

Kicking off at 6 pm on Friday 22 September at Union Square Cineworld, a selection of shorts from Station House Media Unit (SHMU) and the 48 Hour Film Project is expected to sell out quickly, with tickets starting from just £2.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers – and a free drink afterwards! The networking drinks are part of an initiative to stimulate filmmaking in Aberdeen and encourage filmmakers to make new connections.

Aberdeen Shorts Showcase is the start of a very exciting development in Aberdeen’s film scene.

Sam Goldblatt and Louise Knowles, a married couple who produce the 48 Hour Film Project in Edinburgh & Glasgow, are bringing the 48 Hour Film Project to Aberdeen in April 2024. Louise, from Whitecairns, is a playwright, screenwriter and arts producer who uses Doric in her work. The couple are very excited to help build the film scene in Aberdeen.

Sam Goldblatt, Producer of the 48 Hour Film Project, said, “I love Aberdeen so much I married an Aberdonian! Louise and I produce the 48 Hour Film Project in Edinburgh & Glasgow and are so excited to bring this project to Aberdeen, where we spend all of our holiday time. It’s a special city full of so many talented people who deserve a showcase.”

Films screening on 22 September include Enchancers by Aberdeenshire filmmaker Andy Keith. Made for the 48 Hour Film Project, Enchancers is a hilarious buddy film about a magician and his assistant who discover real magic. Starring Aberdeenshire actor Scott Keith and Heather Bowry.

Life’s a Beach, Then You Die is made by Aberdeen filmmaker Jamie Sundance for the 48 Hour Film Project. Starring Aberdeen actors Jordan Merry and Andrew Barrett and shot entirely on Aberdeen Beach, this is a blackly comic look at what two different men would do on their last day on earth.

Aberdeen Shorts Showcase is co-produced with Station House Media Unit (SHMU) who will present some of their recent work. SHMU is one of the core cultural organisations in North East Scotland and is at the forefront of community media development in the UK.

SHMU is a community anchor organisation, supporting residents in the seven regeneration areas of Aberdeen in radio and video production, traditional and on-line publications, music production and digital inclusion. These platforms are used as vehicles for personal and collective change; supporting skills development, active citizenship, community capacity building and community development.

The 48 Hour Film Project is the world’s largest filmmaking competition, and Scotland’s biggest filmmaking event. Since 2008, over 1,000 films have been made and screened to capacity crowds in cinema. Many filmmakers have gone on to great success, including James Price whose recent BBC TV series Dog Days was picked up by the judge who saw his 48 Hour Film – Aberdeen’s own Carolynne Sinclair Kidd.

Tickets from £2. Enjoy free drinks at the bar after the event.
