NORTHWOOD, a prominent estate and lettings agency in the North East of Scotland, commemorates 15 years in business through a philanthropic initiative benefitting 15 local charities.

Founded in 2009 by Laura Mearns and her husband Steven, the agency plans a series of community-focused activities, including hands-on assistance and fundraising events, to mark this significant milestone.

In a bid to ‘give back’ to the local community, Northwood’s team of 12 will extend practical support each month to various organisations, ranging from painting jobs to mock interviews for job seekers. The initiative aims to contribute to the region’s welfare and underscore the agency’s commitment to social responsibility.

Despite its humble beginnings, Northwood has experienced remarkable growth, currently operating offices in Aberdeen and Inverurie, with a notable presence in surrounding areas. Laura Mearns, co-founder, expresses the team’s dedication, stating, “This year will be our 15th year in business, and we knew we wanted to do something particularly special to mark that.”

The agency has already kick-started its philanthropic endeavours by dedicating time to Somebody Cares, helping sort through donations in the charity’s warehouse and shop. Throughout the year, Northwood plans to support organisations like Befriend A Child, Maggie’s, Grampian Women’s Aid, Cash for Kids, HomeStart, SensationALL, and Cyrenians.

In addition to volunteering opportunities, Northwood has planned three fundraising events, including a daring wing walk, a 24-mile walk from Ballater to Banchory along the Deeside Way, and a fire walk scheduled for November.

Laura Mearns, a well-known figure in Aberdeen and Inverurie due to her support for local businesses and charitable organisations, emphasises the unanimous decision of the team to contribute to the community. “We have spoken to many organisations and charities across a wide range of needs to find out who might benefit from our time, and we are delighted to be able to offer support to so many amazing causes,” she said.

The agency has donated approximately £35,000 to various local charities and organisations over the past 15 years. This year, the team aims to exceed a £1 million turnover, reflecting both its commitment to community welfare and its impressive business growth.

The 15 x 15 program includes not only practical assistance but also a series of lunch-and-learn events designed to raise awareness of critical issues. These events will cover topics such as financial welfare, cancer in the workplace, and recognizing signs of domestic abuse.

Amidst the philanthropic activities, the team looks forward to celebrating its journey with a grand party in November, culminating in a sponsored fire walk. “It’s been a very busy start to the year, with lots of fun to look forward to. We are all excited to be a part of our 15 x 15 programme.”
