FUEL Change (also known as Powering Futures) is one of the many Curriculum Enhancement Courses available to S6 pupils at Robert Gordon’s College.

Over the coming months, pupils are working with Dr Gray, Head of Geography, on two climate sustainability challenges. They will be tasked to create a solution to a challenge faced by real-life organisations, and then present their solution back to a panel of industry judges.

The aim of Fuel Change is to help pupils develop their meta-skills, such as learning how to create ideas, develop their team working and critical thinking skills. Pupils also have the opportunity to achieve an additional SQA Higher certificate at the end of the course.Mr Hardie, Head of S6, shared: “We have launched a wider programme this year which includes the regular offerings like Apologetics Club, S6 Media Group, JASPAR (paired reading scheme with Junior school), Classroom Assistant opportunities and varied Art Activities. Additionally, there are new and exciting options in the shape of the Fuel Change project and RGC Sports Coaching Enhancement where pupils can gain skills and access volunteering opportunities in sports coaching.

“It has been great to see so many of our S6 seize the varied opportunities offered by these enhancement courses and I have no doubt that doing so will help them to develop important skills for their lives and careers beyond school. Particularly pleasing has been the high uptake of S6 supporting younger pupils in the Senior and Junior schools, as JASPARS, Classroom Assistants and helping at various co curricular clubs. Service and Leadership are important themes of our S6 curriculum and I am delighted that so many of our most senior pupils have chosen to share their experiences and expertise with their younger peers and give back to the school community.”

Pupils can choose from any combination of 33 Highers and 26 Advanced Highers, alongside a variety of curriculum enhancement courses. The super-curriculum helps pupils discover their passions and interests, enabling them to make informed decisions about their future career paths and aspirations. While the formal curriculum provides essential knowledge and skills, the super-curriculum supports a broader education that fosters personal growth, critical thinking, and adaptability. Ultimately, a well-rounded education that combines the formal curriculum alongside a robust super-curriculum equips pupils with the tools they need to thrive in an ever-changing world, where adaptability and a love for learning are essential for success.
